The mural Pomona Envisioning the Future aka Pomona Envisions the Future is located in Pomona, California. It was part of Judy Chicago's Pomona Envisioning the Future project. Pomona Envisioning the Future was a collaborative art project which took place in September 2003 in Pomona, California. The project began with a series of discussions and lectures about globalization and the future. Seventy artists, trained by nine facilitators created more than 800 works of art in digital media, photography, sculptures, and painting. The mural was one small part of the project.

The 140' x 42' (43 m × 13 m) mural Envisioning the Future depicts the past, present, and future of the City of Pomona and features the Goddess Pomona after which the City of Pomona is named. It is located at Thomas Plaza in downtown Pomona's Arts District. Eight muralists, along with artists and students, were connected with the mural's design. The mural artists were Amy Runyen (professor, artist, author), Chris Toovey (co-founder dA Center for the Arts in Pomona), Karen Keller, Cori Griffin-Ruiz, Sandra Gallegos, Rupert Hernandez, Lief Frederick (artist, musician), Lynne Kumra, Mary Kay Wilson, Yolanda Londono and Kevin Stewart-Magee. It was painted by 80 artists and participants and is located on the side of the Union Building, 195 West Second Street, Pomona, California. Judy Baca, Gilbert Gil "Magu" Lujan and others were also involved in the project.

This link will take you to the mural in 2D at the correct angle.

The mural was made using photographs which were projected on the wall at night and traced in chalk. The mural itself was envisioned, designed by Judy Chicago with input from a few others. I may post some photos of the restoration, painting and cleaning progress in which I was personally involved. We used Nova Color paint which is high quality acrylic paint. Leif Frederick then power sprayed two coats of UV clear over the mural from the roof and with a cherry picker. Catherine Tessier of the Tessier family who own the building gave the city a facade easement for the Thomas Street mural in 2004. The Tessier family started the Pomona Arts District to try to revitalize the area. They also own the Pomona Fox Theater which they restored. Their plan to revitalize the old run down area was successful.

The mural wasn't finished before the end of Judy Chicago's project in 2003. Cheryl Bookout was the inspiration for the initial project to bring attention to the Pomona Arts District. She was also behind the cleaning, renovation and completion of the mural in 2008. I was part of the 2008 project. I fronted $1,400 for the Nova Color UV clear paint used to protect the project after cleaning, restoration and finishing. I also did most of the cleaning of the lower half and left side of the mural and repainted Pomona's faded blue dress. It was originally painted with cheap house paint which faded.

Lief Frederick got on the cherry picker and sprayed the entire mural with UV clear after the restoration. Cheryl Bookout arranged the permissions, approvals, insurance, artists, politicians... She did everything except paint it. She also lived in the building. Her unit is a few of the upper windows. Chris Toovey is a great guy who lives, works in the area and worked directly with the project including the heavy difficult work. He helped me set up and take down the scaffolding. Amy Runyen worked on the mural originally and is a lovely talented artist, art professor and author.

We'd get to the site early to set up scaffolding and work until the sun hit the wall by 12:00 noon on the weekends for months from spring to summer. We had to stop at noon because the wall was too hot to paint or clean. Water or paint dried instantly before you could wipe off the dirt or work in the paint. I was also in charge of press for the re-dedication. Below is one of my press releases reposted by others. I'm Maria Rivera Cummins. My Rivera family is from Mexico. I didn't want my name on the plaque for personal reasons. These are all my photos.

You can see how much some parts of the mural have faded from 2008 to 2023. I think one reason is the removal of graffiti on the lower middle half. There was also a water issue around the lower glass door area. Some paint used in the original mural was cheap house paint which appears to have flaked, peeled, faded near the water damage. I took all of the photos included here. There was a party after the rededication at a local restaurant. Judy Chicago who led the project with Cheryl Bookout were there along with many, many others who designed and painted the mural.
