Long Beach 5th International Tamale Festival in Long Beach, California by Mary Cummins Maria Rivera

The 5th annual Long Beach International Tamale Festival took place in Long Beach, California on December 7, 2025. The event was held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center at 855 Elm Ave. Long Beach, CA 90813  from 1:00 to 7:00 pm.

There were lots of award winning tamales, Mexican food, vendors, tequila tasting, micheladas, folklorico dancers, Santa Claus and more. The event was outdoors in the 57,000 sf parking lot behind the Scottish Rite Masonic Center. VIP ticket holders didn't have to wait. General Admission visitors had to wait in a long line that wrapped around the block because they had to check IDs because the event served alcohol. I got there at 1:30 and didn't get in for 40 minutes because of the line. General Admission was supposed to be free if you registered but they ended up charging people $15 each to get in. VIP was $75 maybe. Thankfully I had a free ticket.

There were lots of people at the event early just like me. In fact there were so many people that there weren't enough places to sit and eat. The VIP had their own area which was totally empty. There were lines for tamales at a few of the tamale booths.

The tamales were the best I've ever had! They all charged the same $6 each but these tamales were HUGE! They had beef, pork, chicken, vegetarian, vegan, corn, cheese and dessert tamales like strawberry, pineapple and cheesecake. The churro vendor made the most amazing desserts! They were $15 but they were huge on mini waffles or in huge waffle cones with everything.

The Scottish Rite Masonic Center used to be the Ernest Borgnine Theatre. It's a historical building built in 1926.

El Grito at LA City Hall in Los Angeles, California by Mary Cummins

El Grito at Los Angeles City Hall in Los Angeles, California by Mary Cummins. September 13, 2025. Mexican Independence day. Grito de Dolores. Lucha libre, mercado, vendors, music, folklorico dancing, DJs, food trucks. Los Jornaleros del Norte were there and they were fantastic. Their new song eff migre drops this week. Milpa Musica was there in a makeshift Mexican wrestling ring. Folklorico Revolution was there and were fantastic dancers. Grupo Pindekuecha were also there and were wonderful. I left around 7:00 pm because I needed to get home.

I had a great time though there were some big negatives. They made most of the event private. It was gated off on the side of City Hall. All the speakers were at the private gated off event. They had their own private entertainment, music, dancers. It looks like they were even served a sit down dinner in that area. I saw council person Monica Rodriguez in there in some photos along with General Consul of Mexico Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez. I also saw people dressed in Mexican costumes.

They advertised free parking at the Music Center. It wasn't free even though I showed the parking guy the poster which said it was free with the exact address. It was only free for vendors with passes who had their names on a list or else it was $10. Someone was behind me at the parking entrance or else I would have left the lot to go find free parking.

There was also a gated off VIP seating area in front of the stage on the steps of City Hall. Just like last year there were maybe 300 white chairs which were 100% empty the entire time. People could have been able to sit down and sit closer to the stage but no. People couldn't dance in front of the stage like they usually do at events here.

I just realized that the empty seats are for VIPs  from the private party. They will sit there after their party to watch the Mayor and others give the El Grito speech and ring the bell
